Snow Day

Snowday_and_more_024_1 Being married to a teacher in winter is being married to the weather-obsessed. Since December he has been hoping and praying for snow. Tuesday night he was either tuning in Weather on the 1s, checking the local cable forecast, or surfing the radar pictures on various weather sites (dualing dopplers!). All of it latter-day shamanistic rituals to ensure a snow day that was predicted for Wednesday would actually come to pass. He stood out there at 8 PM, staring at the night sky, waiting for the flakes to fall and fretting that the clock was ticking and there was barely any accumulation to speak of.

I am of a different ilk. I never believe the weather forecasts because they are so very often off the mark. The more I want them to come true it seems the less likely they are to happen. When I went to bed late Tuesday night it had stopped snowing and there were maybe 3 inches on the ground. It did not look good, but at least I felt smug in my good sense. But, like a miracle, we woke up to blizzard conditions and snow piling up quickly in the morning. The school called to let us know that the district was using a snow day. This is the probably the only time I have ever been happy to get a phone call at 5 AM.Lowell_making_tracks_1We're on our second snow day today and it is so awesome.

We came to our town to look at houses around this time last year and there was a lot of snow on the ground. When we saw this house we noticed that the yard had a slope that's perfect for sledding and tons of room for snowmen and forts. We had conversations about how fun it might be to have a big backyard when it snowed. After a pretty disappointing winter so far it looked like we might not get a chance to find out this year. Now we know. And it's pretty damn fun. Especially for my California-raised husband who is unsure how to make a snowman but more than happy to risk frostbite to practice.

I miss snow days.

When I used to work in the film industry, we were always gathering weather information from every possible source, because the directors felt that if there was one weatherperson, somewhere, anywhere, that was saying there was a 90% chance of rain instead of a 100% chance, then we wouldn't have to cancel the day. I'm happy to have a nice indoor job now, but what I woudln't give for a snow day!

Enjoy the sledding!

Oh, that snowsuit brings back so many memories, I love the way they waddle around like little penguins in them. Have fun!

Snow days are fun, especially when you decide to try travelling in them.

NOT.

Oh my gosh - just read your blog. I hope the glue helped MamaT. Word to the wise: do not sniff glitter glue. Gives new meaning to the term "disco nose."

Is there anything cuter than little kids bundled up in snowsuits staggering around in the snow? I think not.

I've been making deals with the devil over here to try and coerce a little snow fall action. Poor Julia was promised snow in the winter and here her mama apparently brought California weather with her.

Enjoy the snow!

I never get snow in my hometown
